Do Cottage Market Co. products contain preservatives?
Cottage Market Co. makes natural skincare products. Because our focus is on avoiding harmful toxins and chemicals that are typically found in most preservatives, we only make products with no water and no preservatives. Preseratives are typically found in products containing water. Water is an excellent breeding ground for microbes and bacteria, thus requiring some form of preservative. Since products at the Cottage are anhydrous (meaning we don't use water), there is no necessity to add the preservatives. We do however, like to add natural anti-oxidants (such as some essential oils, vitamin E, etc) to prevent products from spoiling.
What is the typical shelf-life of natural beauty products if you don't use preservatives?
Typical shelf-life of all products is around 6 months. As always, shelf life can vary based upon storage conditions. Store all items in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight. To extend the life of your natural products even more, you may consider refrigerating them as well. Even with preservatives, people tend to keep their items MUCH longer than deemed safe. Our hands contain natural micrrobes and bacteria that can be added to your products, thus decreasing its shelf life. Typical range for all our skin care is 6 months but as we like to say, "when in doubt, throw it out". (And then come browse the Market again to see what other awesome stuff we have for your skin! ;) )
Don't oils melt in extreme heat? What do I do if my body butter is left out in the warmth?
If exposed to extreme heat body butters will melt. We typically use coconut oil and Shea butter that melt slightly once heated above 80F. So if you are stuck in a house that has no air conditioning or your package was left out in the hot sun, have no fear! Your product will return to its natural, thickened state once returning to room temperature. However, the melting may cause the oils to separate and re-harden not as thoroughly mixed so, if able, we recommend trying to give your products a simple and quick re-mix with a spoon before cooling. We also ask that you retrieve your package upon delivery to prevent this occurrence or choose to pick your package up from the post office. Once home, store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight. We we cannot responsible for any melted products but by honoring these few rules your butters shouldn't ever melt! (And honestly, I keep mine in the bathroom cupboard and they do JUST fine!).
